Namings

Naming ceremonies are like a very personal Christening but without the religious part! They are often held at the start of a family party – in fact many families combine a naming with a first birthday party.

Humanists UK has produced a three-minute video on namings to give you more of an idea of what they are.

Humanists UK introduce naming ceremonies

Naming ceremonies often include readings, music and parental promises with parents formally committing themselves to raising their child to the best of their ability.

Many couples also appoint ‘guideparents’ (other terms are available!) – people who will be there for their children as they grow and build a special relationship with them.

As with all humanist ceremonies, the exact content and wording will be worked out between the family and celebrant.
